April 2008 Minutes

Meeting called to order at 1909 by Cdr Singleman.  Pledge of Allegiance was recited, Invocation by Base Chaplin Janet Irwin and the Toiling of the Boats for the month of April.  All members introduced themselves and World War II Veterans Vito DeLeonardis and Ray Koch were recognized.  A motion was made by Bill Preece to accept the March minutes and was seconded by Fred Carlson.  Treasurer’s report was given:

            Checking Account Balance:          $2,156.97

            Base CD                                             $6,326.18

            Memorial Money Mkt Account:      $36,178.25

            Memorial Checking Account         $ 127.84

A motion to accept was made and seconded by Jim Irwin.

Treasurer Carlson announced that a DVD was available that was made of the exploits of Lou Drapalski’s boat USS Pintado SS-387 , anyone interested in the purchase see Fred with a $5.00 bill and he will turn the DVD over to you.

The civilian community did not come out as we had hoped for the National Submarine Day Remembrance Ceremony at the Saratoga County Building even though we had public service announcements made at six radio stations, a media blitz in local newspapers ( Saratoga-Schenectady-Albany-Glens Falls ) and over thirty letters to Assemblymen, Mayors and County Supervisors .   Town of Ballston Supervisor Patty Southworth in speaking with Cdr Singleman mentioned that a piece of property on Route 50 (Scotia-Ballston Spa road) was available for purchase and might fit out plans for the Memorial.  She was going to walk the property and get back to us with information.

Also in regards to a Memorial site location, Walt Taylor mentioned the Route 50 arterial in the Town of Wilton better known as the Saratoga/Wilton Mall area, i.e., Lowes, Wall Mart, Walgreens etc. might be an option.

OLD BUSINESS

Jim Irwin has the date set for the Albany-Saratoga Base Picnic – AUGUST 2ND which will be held at Lanthier’s Grove.  Jim will send out a message and a flyer (he already has) with the info.  Payment for attendees must be received no later than the July meeting.  Jim also reported that the District 2/District 5 meeting would be held on the 25th of October in Clifton Park .  A motion was made to make available $50.00 from the Albany-Saratoga base for the meeting seconded by Bill Preece.   A ten man working party (volunteers) to assist will be called away prior to the meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

We are looking to participate at the Veterans Day at Saratoga Race Course in August.  Organizations set up tables in the paddock area and I have sent an email to NYRA requesting information about sponsoring a race on that day as well as being a participant in Veterans Day.      MORE TO FOLLOW

Cdr Singleman brought out the fact that we must start forming committees to work on items such as:  Memorial Foundation, Base By-laws, Foundation By-laws,  etc.  There also was a mention to look into the possibility of going back to split meetings i.e., Saratoga / Clifton Park area in an attempt to draw more people to the base meetings.  Another way to increase attendance would be to car pool to where ever.

Parade season starts in May (this month) and we have been invited to participate in the Lansenburg parade on the 26th of May (Monday) at 1300.  More info will be obtained and presented at our May meeting.  We actively partake in the Saratoga Memorial Day Parade,

the Saratoga Flag Day Parade (June)  and the Schuylerville Turning Point Parade (August).

MORE TO FOLLOW AND DISCUSSED AT OUR MAY MEETING

Our next meeting will be held on

                                                May 21, 2008 at 1900
